How to Make an Observer in Minecraft

Redstone automations in Minecraft are one very popular thing. It can help you do things, without manual assistance.

From growing crops and collecting them, up to spawning chickens by throwing eggs, and when they grow burn them to cooked chicken.

With that said, since Minecraft’s redstone projects have been complicated for the wide majority, Mojang decided to add a new item, called the observer.

In this tutorial, we are going to take a look on how to make an observer in Minecraft and how we can use it.

What is an observer in Minecraft

Observers in Minecraft are a special block, which is powered by redstone. They can follow the process of animal or crop growing.

Once a crop or a mob grows enough and can be seen by observer’s eyes, then it will start doing the commands you had set.

For example, we can make an observer to follow the sugarcane growing process. If we place and observer 2 blocks higher than the sugarcane, and one pistol below the observer, nothing will happen until the sugarcane reaches 3 blocks high in total.

But once the height of 3 blocks is met, the observer will see the sugarcane and will trigger the redstone system. The pistons mentioned earlier should activate and push the sugarcane, which means destroying 2 blocks of sugarcane in total.

After the process has finished, the observer will not see any objects, so it will trigger a powering off option, which means that the pistons will also be turned off, until the sugarcane grows.

Where can I find an observer in Minecraft

The observer is an item, which can be found in Minecraft, neither traded with villagers. The only way to obtain an observer in Minecraft is by making it while following the recipe, which we will reveal later.

What materials do I need to make an observer in Minecraft

To make an observer you will need to be a bit advanced, as it will require quite some items.

  • 6 cobblestone
  • 2 redstone dust
  • 1 quartz

Cobblestone is one of the easiest blocks to obtain in the game. You can easily mine it with a wooden pickaxe.

However, redstone dust will be a bit hard. To get redstone in Minecraft, you will need to have an iron pickaxe, which can be obtained by trading with the villagers, or mining iron.

Quartz is the hardest material to obtain for beginners, as it will require us to have a nether portal and at least an iron pickaxe. But to make a nether portal, you will need to search for nether portal remains with chests, or simply mine obsidian.

To mine the obsidian you will need to have a diamond pickaxe, which is the minimum requirement. If your pickaxe has no enchantments, it may take a while until you get your first obsidian. You will need a total of 14 obsidian blocks to construct a nether portal.

How to make an observer in Minecraft

When all the items for making an observer in Minecraft have been gotten, we will need a crafting table, as the recipe needs a 3×3 crafting grid.

The 1st and 3rd row of the crafting table needs to be filled with cobblestone. On the 2nd row, you can place the redstone, filling 1st and 2nd space, while the quartz will go in the 3rd one.

If you have followed the recipe correctly, you should be receiving an observer.

If you require more observers, it will be best to go back and mine the parts, before you start your redstone projects.

Can I stack observers in Minecraft

You can stack up to 64 observers per inventory slot in Minecraft, and that cannot be changed. Perhaps you may try using a plugin or mod to change the number, but by default that cannot happen.
